Meet Lucy....

Hi! I’m really excited to be working with New Union as a Volunteer Open Data and Communities Campaign Officer! I will be researching how the third sector can work to improve their use of open data, and hopefully interview some interesting people to learn about their experiences!

I want to know more about how third sector staff have experienced open data, understand what skills they need to improve these experiences, and discuss what both local and national governments can do to aid this.

Community-led campaigning is so important, especially in an age of digitalisation. The Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of access to data, ensuring the survival of third sector organisations such as charities and volunteer groups, as well as holding governments and representatives to account for their actions.

I am passionate about improving the relationship between governments and the third sector. I studied Politics from school right through to my Master’s degree, particularly focusing on the relationship between politicians and the media in the UK. Working in an MP’s office for 18 months gave me an insight into the workings of the UK Government and how both politicians and the public can work to influence policy at the top level. I am also proud to say that I was part of the team who retained the MP’s seat in the 2019 snap General Election; increasing his majority in pretty difficult circumstances!

Outside of my political interests, my hobbies include dance, reading lots of novels, socialising with friends and family (usually with a glass of wine!), and watching - according to my boyfriend - ‘dark and depressing’ documentaries (they are super interesting though I promise!!).
